Housing recap

If you don't know your rights, you have no rights. CA Civil Code sections 1925-1997 govern renter's law, familiarize yourself with them. The CA Department of Consumer Affairs legal services unit publishes California Tenants - A Guide to Residential Tenants' and Landlords' Rights and Responsibilities which you may also find useful. If you feel your rights have been violated, you may attempt restitution via Small Claims Court, where you don't need and can't bring a lawyer.

The single most important thing you can do to help us sort out housing issues is to let us know as soon as you start having problems, what the problem is, and who is causing you these problems (eg your roommate, someone in the housing office, etc). Many people discuss housing problems on the GSA forums, and there is much information there.

Housing policy references the 'normative time to degree' in various places but leaves hunting that information as an exercise for the reader. The OGS website has some info about these numbers, and we have a copy of the times as a pdf: Departmental time limits for the Ph.D. (updated July 22, 2009)

Anyone who's been around for a while or done a search for housing on our webpage here can tell you that university affiliated housing is one of the most contentious issues grad students have grappled with in the past few years. In an attempt to straighten out the facts, we'll try to keep updated versions of the grad housing contract and other relevant housing information linked here.
