Graduate and Professional Student Experience and Satisfaction (GPSES) Survey and Related Documents

In the 2004-2005 academic year, the GSA surveyed the graduate student population at UCSD to determine where the shortcomings in the graduate student experience at UCSD were and how to improve it.  The prime actors in this effort were Andrew Stringfellow, Dana Dahlstrom, and Laura Kwinn.  After a tremendous amount of effort they managed a very high response rate of 37%.  This is still the best source of information about many graduate student demographics.

GPSES Survey Report - Released 2005

Among the more striking findings of the GPSES Survey were that fewer than 10% of graduate students feel a connection to the campus, and many found the social and cultural experience significantly lacking.  As a follow up to this Survey a committee of graduate students, faculty, and staff was formed to assess the survey results and determine what steps were appropriate to improve UCSD in the areas identified in the Survey.  This effort was chaired by graduate student Derek Lomas and Prof. Vistasp Karbhari. 

Graduate and Professional Student Experience and Satisfaction (GPSES) Committee Final Report - Released May 2007

The GSA council of 2006-2007 found that the GPSES Committee report did a good job of identifying many cultural aspects of UCSD that could be improved, but overlooked some structural issues that could be improved to enhance the general graduate student experience at UCSD, including housing, transportation, orientation, communications, and student support services.  As a result the council formed a committee to draft a supplement to the report and passed it at a special session in May of 2007.  This remains the primary internal advocacy platform and agenda of the GSA.

GPSES Supplement Report  - Released June 2007

 the GSA council of 2007-2008 advocates for the policies put forth in the GPSES Supplement Report through the GPSES Steering Committee, the Affiliated Housing Advisory Committee, and in meetings between the Exec Council members and the administration.  To address the issue of a lack of community within UCSD the GSA has opened, with the gift of free space and utilities from housing, Cafe Vita at the One Miramar Street housing complex.  In order to address both the identified lack of satisfaction with UCSD cultural life and the lack of community, the GSA has added an Outreach Coordinator.  The GSA remains actively seized of the issues raised by the original GPSES Survey.
